We’d like you to meet Jon Schubert, a graphic designer for the Fossil brand image team and all-around explorer. When he’s not designing posters for our Greenhouse events or our iconic tins, Jon is traveling around the globe, collecting experiences of a lifetime, plus a unique set of accessories. Take it away, Jon!

Q: Where are you from?

A: “Dallas.”

Q: What do you do at Fossil and what makes your job unique?

A: “I’m a graphic designer in the brand image team at Fossil. My job is unique in that I spend each day creating a wide variety of fun and interesting branded material, using various techniques. Sometimes I’m drawing things by hand, and sometimes I’m on the computer. Each project has its own process and a set of unique challenges—it keeps things interesting and allows me to grow as a designer.”

Q: What have you learned in your career?

A: “I’ve learned that there is always something to do better, something to learn, and that there’s a creative frontier within yourself to push against. I’m lucky to have so many talented people around to remind me of that.”

Sketches of landmarks are just a few of the inspirational works in progress.

Q: How would you describe your personal style?
A: “I don’t think about my personal style so much, I just go with what I like. I am inspired by fashions of the past, it’s the rugged adventurer look.”

A wearable scrapbook of his travels, Jon’s necklaces range from an Indian antique ring he found on South Congress in Austin, Texas to a coin from an East India Company shipwreck. Another coin is from 19th century Mombasa, and Jon traded his boots for it in a Kenyan market. The “tooth” is a carved bone totem picked up on a trip to Stone Town, Zanzibar six months ago. On his wrist is The Agent Three-Hand Leather Watch in brown. Under his Fossil sweater, Jon sports a screen-printed Anchor tee he made in college from a 16th century Venetian printer’s mark. A: What inspires you on a daily basis?

Q: “I’m inspired daily by people and the stories unfolding in the world we live in. For me, design starts with art, and visual art is a form of storytelling, allowing us to rise above the immediate—the facts and statistics of the modern world—and speak in a collective tongue that embraces a timeless humanity. People doing things makes me want to do things as well.”

Q: Your favorite current Fossil item?

A: “The Everett Car Coat is my favorite item right now. I’m a sucker for khaki and pockets that look ready for adventure.”

Q: When you’re not at the HQ, where would we find you?

A: “When not at the office I enjoy time outdoors, usually running, and weekend trips to Austin or somewhere else that’s rad. I love a good Sunday brunch with friends. Several times a week I just stay home and work on personal art projects and read.”

Q: Who is your style icon?

A: “I don’t have a single style icon but I’ve always been a fan of Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt and Joseph Gordon-Levitt—at least the way GQ likes to present them. However, I think Depp steps to his own drum and I’ve always appreciated that.”
